Artist’s Statement – Katie Johnston
Katie Johnston is an emerging artist taking inspiration from the colours and textures of the natural world and adapting her works in clay to encapsulate her life experience.
Her ceramics explore the world of her childhood home in outback Queensland and her life journey from there to the beach and the city where she now lives and creates.
Katie’s most recent ceramic works explores the use of ash, stone and soil from her home property in creating surface texture and colour on her ceramics and a unique haptic experience for the viewer, embodying “environment and place”. Similarly, with her printmaking, Katie is exploring “environment and place” through the use of natural pigments and eco-printing on textiles and paper.
Katie’s current practice is further influenced by her great-great-grandmother’s unpublished memoir of the early colonisation and settlement of outback Queensland and its effect on first nations people.
